Student Accomplishments
2023 Honors Program Graduates
The Honors Program recognized the many accomplishments of its graduating seniors at its annual End-of-Year Recognition Ceremony on May 4, 2023. The 2023 graduates were acknowledged for their scholarship, commitment to graduate school preparation, and professional development.
To mark the completion of the Program, each senior received a plaque and the Honors Program graduation medallion. From this group, six seniors—Sofia Dirie, Rone Green, Chika Iwuji, Lynn Porter, Jamie Reed, and Torree Webb--received the University’s coveted Distinguished Eagle Award for having earned the highest grade point averages in their majors.
The Honors Program congratulates the following graduating seniors:
Beatrice Asante (Biology—Upper-Division Scholar) has the professional goal of helping and connecting with people as a Physician Assistant. Upon graduation, she is planning to work as a phlebotomist to earn patient contact hours in preparation for a Physician’s Assistant program.
Sofia Dirie (Political Science—Fanny Jackson Coppin Scholar) will be receiving full tuition to attend the University of Baltimore School of Law, having successfully completed the Fannie Angelos Program sponsored by the institution. Completing the requirements for her degree in three years, Ms. Dirie received the Honors Program’s highest recognition—the medal of achievement—and graduated magna cum laude.
Michael Dorcean (Biology—Eagle Scholar) has not only performed well academically, but he has received recognition and awards for his contribution to Coppin’s baseball team. Mr. Dorcean will be working as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at RPM Baseball in Maspeth, NY, after interning as an athletic trainer during the summer of 2022.
Gionni Gibson (Entertainment Management—Honors Associate Scholar) is an early completer of the Honors Program, fulfilling the requirements of both the Honors Program and her degree program in three years. Ms. Gibson has fielded offers from a number of companies including Tri-State Financial Advisors, Enterprise, Advanced Axis, and Florida Financial Advisors. Ms. Gibson has decided to join Enterprise and plans to continue her studies for real estate licensure. Ms. Gibson graduated magna cum laude.
Rone Green (Criminal Justice and Nonprofit Leadership—Eagle Scholar) worked to complete the requirements for two undergraduate degrees while she prepared for the LSAT as a Fannie Angelos Scholar. She graduated with magna cum laude distinction. Currently, Rone’ is teaching fourth grade English/Language Arts at the Baltimore International School.
Chika Iwuji (Biology and Life Sciences—Fanny Jackson Coppin Scholar) has been accepted into Wake Forest University’s master’s program in Biomedical Science. Upon completing her master’s degree, she plans to continue her education in pursuit of a medical degree. Ms. Iwuji graduated summa cum laude.
Sierra Myhill (Nursing—Eagle Scholar) completed the requirements for her program with magna cum laude distinction. As she awaits the opportunity to complete the NCLEX, Ms. Myhill serves as Patient Navigator in the Emergency Department at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital.
Anne-Colombe Nguatta (Biology and Life Sciences—Eagle Scholar) has been accepted to pharmacy programs at Howard University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, and University of Maryland Baltimore with scholarship support. Ms. Nguatta will pursue her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) at University of Maryland, with the support of the Dean’s Scholarship that provides $10,000/year for 4 years. Ms. Nguatta graduated cum laude.
Keylin Perez (Nursing—Upper-Division Scholar) Upper-Division Scholar) was commissioned as active duty in the Army Nurse Corps and assigned the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After completing her Basic Officer Leader Course in San Antonio, Texas, Ms. Perez will serve as a psychiatric nurse for the military. Ms. Perez graduated magna cum laude.
Lynn Porter (Sport Management—Fanny Jackson Coppin Scholar) completed the Honors Program and the requirements for her degree in 3.5 years, and will begin her master’s in Athletic Training at Gannon University in May. Ms. Porter will continue as a scholar-athlete, playing on the Gannon softball team. She graduated magna cum laude.
Jamie Reed (Elementary Education—Eagle Scholar) has been accepted to master’s programs in education at University of Maryland College Park, Frostburg State University, Salisbury University, and George Washington University. She will continue her education at George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development with the support of the MSI Merit Scholarship. Ms. Reed graduated summa cum laude.
Chelitha Thurston (Nursing—Honors Associate Scholar) is working in the Mother-Baby Unit of University of Maryland Medical Center as a participant in the Clinical Scholars Program. She plans to continue her education to become a Certified Nurse Midwife and has already secured funding through the Ethel Gordon Endowed Scholarship. Chelitha Thurston graduated magna cum laude.
Taylor Warner (Early Childhood Education—Eagle Scholar) graduated magna cum laude and looks forward to working with the Howard County Public School System. She currently enjoys a long-term, substitute teacher position at Laura Woods Elementary School.
Torree Webb (Health Sciences—Honors Associate Scholar) is excited to begin a service-learning opportunity with Community Health Pathways—Baltimore Corps as she prepares for a career as a Community Health Navigator. Ms. Webb graduated magna cum laude.

Past Graduates
The Honors Program recognized the accomplishments of its graduating seniors at its annual End-of-Year Recognition Ceremony on May 6, 2022. This year’s program marked a welcome return to in-person acknowledgment of our scholars. The Honors Program recognized the 2022 graduates for their strong academic performance, commitment to scholarship, and professional development.
Each senior received a plaque and the Honors Program medallion that is to be worn at Commencement. From this group, three seniors—Desiree Carrizosa, Rebekka Hauri, and Sergiu Medesan--received the University’s coveted Distinguished Eagle Award for having earned the highest grade point average in each of their majors.
The Honors Program congratulates the following graduating seniors:
Desiree Carrizosa (English—Eagle Scholar) is admitted to the Master of Arts program in Education with a California Preliminary Teaching Credential at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California. She interned with the California Military Institute and Glen Avenue Elementary in Salisbury, MD, and she represented Coppin on our softball team. Desiree Carrizosa graduates summa cum laude and has received the Distinguished Eagle Award for having earned the highest grade point average among graduating seniors in the English major.
Mikayla Doughty (Criminal Justice—Upper-Division Scholar) served as an intern with the Office of Public Safety and became a Harbor City Links Scholar as a Coppin student. She has applied to the Master of Science program in Criminal Justice at the University of Baltimore as well as to the Forensic Science program at Stevenson University. After completing her master's from the university of her choice, Ms. Doughty desires a position within the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent. Mikayla Doughty graduates magna cum laude.
Rebekka Hauri (Biology—Upper-Division Scholar) has worked as a research assistant in the Ophthalmic Research Laboratory in our Department of Natural Sciences and is a member of our volleyball team. She has been recruited by Rollins College in Florida and will be pursuing a Master's in Public Health. Ms. Hauri will receive funding through an athletic scholarship, and she will take advantage of an additional year of eligibility on the college’s volleyball team. Graduating summa cum laude, Rebekka aspires to become a Biomedical Researcher and has received the Distinguished Eagle Award for having earned the highest grade point average among graduating seniors in the Biology major.
Aryanna Huffnagle (Criminal Justice, December 2021—Upper-Division Scholar) is an early completer of the Honors Program and is serving in the United States Army, entering as a Second Lieutenant Infantry Officer. Ms. Huffnagle graduates summa cum laude and has plans to pursue graduate research in military intelligence.
Kayla Macklin (Management Information Systems—Honors Associate Scholar) will be working as an Information Technology Auditor with the United States Access Board in Washington, DC, where she previously completed an internship. Kayla Macklin graduates summa cum laude.
Sergiu Medesan (Sport Management—Upper-Division Scholar) will assume the position of Head Tennis Coach at Break Tennis Club in Constanța, Romania upon graduation. As an undergraduate, Mr. Medesan represented Coppin on our tennis team and was inducted into The National Society of Leadership and Success. The summa cum laude graduate plans to continue his education in an MBA program in the coming years. Mr. Medesan has also received the Distinguished Eagle Award for having earned the highest grade point average among graduating seniors in the Sport Management major.
Princess Onukwufor (Nursing—Upper-Division Scholar) will be working as a nurse while gaining the requisite experience for admission to a Doctor of Nursing Practice program. While at Coppin, Ms. Onukwufor received practical experience at Baltimore Crisis Response, Inc. and University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus. Princess Onukwufor graduates cum laude.
Henrietta Rolle (Biology—Upper-Division Scholar) has been accepted into the Master of Science program in Forensic Science at Towson University with scholarship support. Ms. Rolle served as an intern with the CREST Program in our Department of Natural Sciences, and she aspires to become a Forensic Pathologist with the government. Henrietta Rolle graduates magna cum laude.

On April 23, 2021, the Honors Program recognized the accomplishments of its graduating seniors at its annual End-of-Year Recognition Ceremony. This year’s virtual program recognized the 2021 graduates for their strong academic performance and commitment to scholarship and professional development.
Each senior received the Honors medal of achievement to be worn at Commencement. From this group, three seniors--Ashanti Davis, Bhuwanashwar Dyal, and Jason Hamm-Bey--received the university’s coveted Distinguished Eagle Award for having earned the highest grade point average in each of their majors.
The Honors Program congratulates the following graduating seniors:
Iyana Arrington (Criminal Justice—Golden Eagle Scholar) successfully completed the University of Baltimore School of Law Fannie Angelos Scholars Program and faced the difficult task of deciding which law school to attend. Ms. Arrington has been accepted to both the University of Baltimore School of Law and St. John’s University School of Law with full funding. Ms. Arrington has also been accepted to Howard University. She has decided to continue her studies at the University of Baltimore School of Law, as she would like to be near the District of Columbia to pursue a federal court clerkship. Ultimately, she hopes to serve as a federal prosecutor.
Nia Bowe (Biology—Eagle Scholar) will earn a certificate in Applied Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Coppin State University while she continues her work as a veterinary assistant. Ms. Bowe plans to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, and she will be applying to Virginia Tech/Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and Colorado State Western University of Health Sciences for fall 2022 matriculation.
Ashanti Davis (Criminal Justice—Honors Associate Scholar) will be working towards her master’s in Forensic Investigation at Stevenson University with scholarship support. Ms. Davis plans to explore different elements of criminal justice and forensics, particularly fraud analysis.
Bhuwanashwar Dyal (Biology—Upper-Division Scholar) will attend Palmer University West Campus in San Jose, California where he will be working towards his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. He plans to specialize in sports injuries and injury rehabilitation. Mr. Dyal’s goal is to open his own chiropractic clinic.
Jason Hamm-Bey (Social Work— Upper-Division Scholar) will be working towards his Master of Social Work at Catholic University of America School of Social Work in Washington, DC with generous scholarship support. Mr. Hamm-Bey was also accepted to Morgan State University School of Social Work.
Kelvin Kamau (Nursing— Upper-Division Scholar) will be working as a nurse while gaining the requisite nursing experience to apply for admission to Doctor of Nursing Practice programs.
Jazzleen McRae (Accounting— Fanny Jackson Coppin Scholar) will be joining the Accounting and Finance Development Program at Walmart Corporate. The Program rotates recent graduates throughout its departments to position them for various roles within the organization.
Oluwatobi Olutimehin (Computer Science—Golden Eagle Scholar) has accepted a position with Nextdoor in San Francisco, California as a software engineer. This position follows an exciting virtual internship opportunity with Coinbase where he served as a software engineering intern.
Dominic Russell (Mathematics—Eagle Scholar) has applied to mathematics education programs at Towson University, Bowie State University, and University of Colorado. Ultimately, he has a goal of completing a Ph.D. in mathematics and working in higher education administration.
Lionel Williams (Criminal Justice—Eagle Scholar) is considering graduate programs in Criminal Justice at Coppin State University and University of Baltimore.

This year’s Honors End-of-Year Recognition Program took a very different form. Not to be deterred by remote campus operations in response to the covid-19 crisis, the Honors Program held a virtual ceremony to spotlight the achievements of its seniors. In addition to strong academic performance, these 2020 graduates are recognized for a commitment to their own growth as scholars and professionals as is evidenced by their most recent graduate school acceptances and employment offers.
Sharon Adekoya (Applied Psychology—Upper-Division Scholar) will be working with FoodCorps to ensure children access to healthy, sustainable foods in our nation’s school districts. Ms. Adekoya has also received partial funding to pursue a M.S. in Clinical Psychology at Towson University.
Cole Gerula (Sports Management—Upper-Division Scholar) will continue his college baseball career as a graduate student at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. He will complete the requirements for a master’s in Business Administration.
Nathaniel McClean (Chemistry—Golden Eagle Scholar) found himself in the difficult—but enviable—position of choosing between two generous graduate school offers: The Ohio State University (Ph.D. in Chemistry with full funding) and University of Maryland Baltimore (Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Science with full funding). Mr. McClean chose to remain in the area to attend University of Maryland Baltimore, where he will be working as a research assistant.
Oluwadamilola Oloyede (Accounting—Upper-Division Scholar) has turned her two-year internship with the Department of Defense into her dream job. As an Accountant with the federal government, she will also receive funding to continue her studies on the graduate level.
Allen Saar (Biology—Golden Eagle Scholar) will complete the MCAT in June and is already preparing his applications for medical school. Mr. Saar will consider a career in osteopathic medicine or pediatrics.
Asia Stennis (Nursing—Golden Eagle Scholar) is excited about her new position as a Graduate Nurse at Barnes Jewish Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Ms. Stennis is interested in continuing her studies at the Barnes Jewish Goldfarb School of Nursing to become a Nurse Practitioner with a focus on acute care. She plans to eventually earn her M.S. in Nursing.
Oluchukwu Usoh (Biology—Eagle Scholar) will be attending graduate school at Towson University. She will pursue an M.S. degree in Molecular and Cell Biology, and she has received funding assistance in the form of a teaching assistantship. Ms. Usoh’s ultimate goal is to earn a Ph.D. in Biology.

The Honors Program is proud to share the accomplishments of its 2019 graduating seniors. In addition to strong academic performance, these Honors students have engaged in activities ranging from community service to graduate school admission preparation and career development. Their commitment to their own growth as scholars and professionals is evidenced by their most recent graduate school acceptances and employment offers.
Keenan Forbes (Management) is honing his entrepreneurial skills as he develops his own clothing brand and line. He plans to further develop those skills through pursuit of an MBA/MA in Design Leadership at The Johns Hopkins University.
Jorge Rodriguez (Management) has successfully balanced the requirements of the tennis team with those of his academic program and the Honors Program. He plans to complete an online MBA program while working in his position as Director of International Expansion, Tennis Central.
Lunnise Gibson (Accounting) began the journey of becoming a CPA first as an intern with financial services and accounting firm Ernst & Young, and then with Deloitte, where she is currently an audit intern. Ms. Gibson expects her internship to become a permanent, full-time position. Meanwhile, Deloitte has offered to fund the cost of her CPA exam upon successful completion.
Precious Udofe (Biology and Life Sciences) will begin a M.S. program in Molecular and Cell Biology at Towson University where she has been offered a teaching assistantship. Upon completion of her master’s, Ms. Udofe plans to enroll in medical school.
Brothers Chima and Obinna Iwuji (Biology and Life Sciences) have a shared vision of becoming physicians. Both have been immersed in research since their freshman year. And now, while awaiting news of medical school acceptances, they plan to continue their research in biology.
Anil Yadav (Computer Science) will begin a PhD program in Bioengineering at The University of California, Los Angeles with full funding.

“The main purpose for my wanting to pursue a law degree is so that I can become an attorney. In the criminal justice system, there are a lot of individuals who are not treated fairly and are given harsh sentences…for misdemeanor crimes. I would like to be (the) voice that…represents them correctly and makes sure that they get fair sentencing.
As soon as I heard about The Fannie Angelos Program, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. It is a great program that not only helps HBCU students prep for the LSAT but also allows the students to network with lawyers and judges as well. I am honored to be a part of the Program.”

The (Program) will help you (maintain) faith…because if you have self-doubt, you won't do well!”
